Some hints in using Power Point

The teacher will show you the basics of adding text to slides.

Using different views (from View menu)

You usually use the Slide View when creating slides. If you want to organize the slides, use Slide Sorter. You can use the mouse to drag the slide to its new place.

If you just want to type text slides, the quickest way to do that is to use Outline View. You can change the hierachical level of a title in this view (as well as in the normal view) by using tab and crtl+tab keys.

You can make note pages in Notes Layout -view.

Drawing Autoshapes

The Autoshapes toolbar
AutoShapes toolbar

Check that the toolbar is visible. You can get the Autoshape toolbar (or any other toolbar) visible by clicking the right hand button of the mouse on the toolbar area (on the top of the window).

Some AutoShape hints:

Slide template (Slide master)

Power Point has many different predefined slide templates (from which you can choose when starting to design the slides). It is though useful to know how to a tenplate of one's own, so that you will be able to create slides with common layout and colors, but not looking like standard Power Point slides. (E.g. many companies use a slide template of their own).

Slide Master

All that you do with Slide Master (View|Slide Master) affect the whole presentation. You can also save the Slide Master as a template (Save as|PowerPoint Template) and use it later as a template of another set of slides.

Exercise section

Do the Power Point exercise from the Laboratory Course of Information Technology, Helsinki University of Technology, copyright Sami Ensio and Teemu Muukkonen. You may have to first save the exercise to your R: and open it then with Ms Office Word. If you are not going to emphasize Power Point, just do the exercise parts from 3.1 to 3.5.

Those of you, who want to emphasize Power Point should complete the whole exercise in order to be able to do the Power Point Task.
