Project

Emotion, interaction and institutions

The task of our research project is to analyze the interactional management and institutional regulation of emotion.

We examine verbal and non-verbal practices which incorporate emotion in everyday life and in institutional contexts. The research settings include psychotherapy, medical interaction, everyday conversation between acquaintances, infant–caregiver interaction, and interaction between patients and professionals in treatment of eating disorders. We focus on verbal activities that occur across these settings and incorporate emotion, such as story-telling, complaining and advice-giving, as well as facial, prosodic, gestural and other nonverbal affective expressions.

The comparative analysis, as well as the analysis of each setting, will expand our understanding on the social institutions, institutional regulation of emotions, practices of emotional expression, and the interconnections of the biological and social aspects of human affect.

The leader of the project is Professor Anssi Peräkylä, senior researcher is Docent Johanna Ruusuvuori, and other members of the group are Hanna Falk, Taru Ijäs, Mikko Kahri and Liisa Voutilainen.

The project is funded by Academy of Finland and located at University of Helsinki , Department of Sociology and University of Tampere , Department of Sociology and Social Psychology .
