Two international MSc programmes in Lahti
Helsinki University of Technology and University of Helsinki cooperate closely in implementing high-level research and education concerning also urban issues. Two international master's degree programmes are planned to start in the autumn of 2010:
- Master's Degree Programme in Multidisciplinary Studies on Urban Environmental Issues (University of Helsinki)
- Master's Degree Programme in Environmental Technology (Helsinki University of Technology, from 2010 Aalto University)
Several modules of these two programmes are multidisciplinary and common for the students of both master's degree programmes. Thus, students benefit from having the support of a multidisciplinary and multicultural student community with good opportunities for peer learning.
Multidisciplinary expertise in urban environments is in demand throughout the world. Half of the world's population lives in cities and urbanisation is an ever-spreading global phenomenon. Consequently, problems related to infrastructure, pollution, destruction of the natural environment and ecological processes as well as social issues have come to a head.
Waste management, emissions of pollutants into the soil and water as well as air emissions are examples of problems which require high-quality research, education and new experts.
We need multidisciplinary expertise and understanding in order to find sustainable and people-friendly solutions to these problems. Cities offer excellent opportunities to manage various environmental problems, through, for instance, reduction of energy consumption, environmental pollution and greenhouse gases.
