A Coordination Committee appointed by the rector of the University of Helsinki is responsible for the project management. The Committee consists of the representatives of the financing partners (see Network_structure_and_finance.ppt below).

The Coordination Committee has been appointed to serve as a cooperation body between the contracting parties and the Ministry of Education for a period of three years, 1 October 2003 to 31 December 2006, for the performance agreement period between the universities and the Ministry of Education. The rector of the University of Helsinki has nominated the members proposed by the contracting parties and the Ministry of Education to the team.

The Coordination Committee is chaired by Vice Rector Mauno Kosonen (HU), deputy chairman is Deputy Mayor Ilkka-Christian Björklund (City of Helsinki), and the secretary is coordinator Jussi Kulonpalo who is responsible for the preparation of the project issues and coordination of the Network activities in practice.

Other members of the Coordination Committee are Aulis Pitkälä, Deputy Mayor (City of Vantaa), Hilkka Lehtonen, Professor (HUT), Hannu Niemi, Professor, Dean (HU), Tarmo Pipatti, Mayor (City of Lahti), Marja Pulkkinen, Senior Adviser for Education (Ministry of Education), Ari Saarinen, Senior Adviser for Education (Ministry of Education), Teuvo Savikko, Research Manager (City of Espoo) and Harry Schulman, Research Professor (City of Helsinki). The Coordination Committee is responsible for

• approving the Coordination Committee’s agenda prepared by the secretariat
• defining the focal points of research and approving the research programme prepared by the secretariat
• monitoring the implementation of the content requirements of the urban research project and the finances
• monitoring the implementation of research activities
• providing the urban research network, which is basically an online forum and means of providing information and contacts to promote and consolidate multidisciplinary urban research applicable to Finnish conditions and the situation of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area
• where required, making proposals to improve the content, finances and organisation of the urban research project.

The University of Helsinki and City of Helsinki serve as the Coordination Committee’s secretariat in cooperation with the contracting parties. The members of the secretariat are: Sari Alm (City of Lahti), Mauno Kosonen (HU), Hannu Kyttälä (City of Vantaa), Mervi Ilmonen (HUT), Teuvo Savikko (City of Espoo), Harry Schulman (City of Helsinki), and Jussi Kulonpalo (Network for Urban Studies).
