Course Description:

Globalisation has become so central to discussions of contemporary society that many now argue that it obscures more than it illuminates. In response this course analyses globalisations and the idea of the 'global', and surveys key cultural debates concerning cultural synchronisation, transculturality, cosmopolitanism and emerging notions of global citizenship. By the end of this course students should:

  • Have an understanding of globalisation as a multi-accented term.
  • Be able to identify overlapping and divergent ideas of culture that are widely employed in discussing globalisation.
  • Identify general theoretical ideas of global processes, while recognising the conditions and limits of their applicability.
  • Engage with the issues involved in conducting theoretical research on culturalglobalisation.
  • be able to identify questions or relevance to related courses and potentially for their future research.
