Dates: 27.09. – 2.12.
Days/Times: Tuesdays and Friday 02.12, 12-16.
Location: Unioninkatu 37, seminar room 1

! The foreign degree students of the department of communication may get this course registered as part of their seminar course, study unit 10, upon negotiation with the lecturer of the seminar.

!This course can be registered for degree students also as Study unit 9 f, Networks and Communication.

Prior registration is required!

The course is meant primarily for students of department of communication, both exchange and majoring degree students. 20 students will be taken to the course (10 exchange students, 10 degree students) on a first come first served basis. The exchange students who have included this course in their learning agreements have priority. The registration starts on 12.09.2005 9:00 a.m. and ends on 18.09.2005 at 24:00hrs. Registration in weboodi. In addition, the exchange students are required to send an e-mail to the coordinator of Argonaut Study Program indicating their major subject of study in university of Helsinki, and the name and department of their original university. The list of accepted students will be on the announcement board in the corridor of the department of communication (Unioninkatu 37, first floor) on September 20th.

Course Description:

The course aims to introduce students to the problematic of agency and, especially, of communication in a technically mediated society. The course focuses on such themes as citizenship in-between the local and global, communities, identities, social differences, multicultural spheres and Finnish policies on the information society.

The course offers integrated English Language studies. Students will be guided in giving presentations in English, reading academic texts and gaining skills in academic writing. It will be possible for degree students to have the course registered in two components: 3 credits as course proper and 2 credits registered as English Oral Skills/Englannin suullinen taito).

Course Requirements: Attending l ectures, reading fora, first diary + 3 learning diaries, outline of presentation report, presentation, presentation report.
