Advanced Level Studies Special Course: Designing Worlds: Processes of Globalisation and Localisation in Design, 5 study points for students of department of communication, course code: 770061 This course is organized in cooperation with the School of Design at the University of Art and Design Dates : 20.3 - 15.5. 2005, No class on 17.04 ( Easter holiday) and on 01.05. (May Day) ! This course can be registered for degree students under the study unit 9 c, Media Culture. Preregistration in WebOodi is required! Registration starts 06.02. and ends 05.03. In addition to the WebOodi registration, students are required to send an e-mail to the Coordinator of Argonaut Study Program including a one page summary of their grounds for attending the course. The summary ought to be submitted by March 5th. Only ten students of communication will be accepted to the course. The list of the accepted students will be on the bulleting board of the department of Communication (Unioninkatu 37) on March 13th. N.B.! It is highly recommended that the students who will participate in this course in Spring, will also participate in the course on Luovuuden filosofia ja luova talous (4 op) lectured by professor Himanen this Autumn. The lectures are arranged on Tuesdays 10-14 at the University of Art and Design, Media Centre Lume, lecture hall Sampo (Hämeentie 135 C). Course Description: The objectives of the course are to analyse how the processes of globalisation are affecting the local identities, values and practices and also to reflect on how these processes are manifested in the design paradigm, language and practice. The course is going to introduce the students to theories of globalisation and localisation from various disciplines such as design, communication, sociology, innovation. The students will become familiar with methodological tools for analysis of products, services and artificial systems. Working Methods: Series of lectures (by invited guest lecturers) and teamwork project. Description of project: Based on the 2020 Initiative, the purpose of this project is to propose creative and innovative visions addressed to end poverty for selected marginalised communities. The project will visualise the best posible future for those communities, and it will define strategies to achieve it. The results of the project will be presented at an exhibition. Process
