Course Description:
Transparency and accountability are becoming more and more relevant in the international agenda. Human rights and ethics have become a growing focus in activities on all walks of the society, both globally and locally. This course examines the potential conflict between ethical governance and its practical implementation on the global level. The variance between ethical policies and practices is examined, emphasizing the current status of affairs in the media world. More and more countries have adopted legislation on freedom of expression and independence of media. Yet the laws are not enforced properly, because the implementation may interfere with the business profits of the media houses – or reputation of political decision makers.

During this course practical cases are presented for examining and discussing these issues. Also international law and conventions, practices and instruments for public pressure for compliance of them are being studied. Issue-specific readings are provided during the course.

Examination: lectures and essay. Lectures by Leila Mustanoja are given from 24.01. to 03.02. After that students start working on final essays on given topics under the tutelage of Karoliina Malmelin.
