Ageing in Europe

Call for papers for the 8th European Sociological Association Conference, Glasgow, Scotland, September 3-6, 2007

During the conferences of the European Sociological Association in Helsinki (2001), Murcia (2003) and Torun (2005) the Research Network on Ageing in Europe organised very successful paper sessions and discussions. There was an enormous interest in the ageing topic which resulted in both a huge number of abstracts and immense interest from audiences. At the 8th conference of the European Sociological Association in Glasgow (http://www.esa8thconference.com.), the Ageing in Europe Research Network will again hold paper sessions that focus on empirical, theoretical and conceptual aspects of research on ageing. These sessions will continue on-going discussions as well as adding some new themes.

The RN is now calling for proposals for papers.

Papers should fit into the following thematic areas:

  - Ageing and the Information Society
  - Senior Markets and the Demand for Goods and Services
  - Ageing Societies and the Welfare State
  - Diversity, Inequality and Equity in Ageing Societies
  - Active Ageing Between Labour Markets and Retirement
  - Formal and Informal Care for Older People
  - Health, Mortality and the Experience of Ageing
  - Informal Networks and Intergenerational Relations of Older People
  - Quality of Life in Ageing Societies
  - Norms and Values in the Field of Ageing
  - Interculturality, Cross-Cultural Comparisons and Ageing
  - Images of Ageing and Alternative Approaches

Papers with a cross-national, comparative focus and papers by researchers earlier in their career are particularly to be welcomed. If you need additional information (e.g., if you are not sure whether your paper fits with the theme of a session), please contact the RN co-ordinators. Individuals should not be the first author (i.e. the presenter) of more than one paper.

Abstracts should be sent to the Local Conference Organisers using the abstract submission form on the conference website at http://www.esa8thconference.com/abstractsubmission/submissionform.php - choose 'Ageing in Europe' in the list of Research Networks if you want to give a presentation in one of our sessions.

Please read the submission guidelines before filling in the form! The provisional deadline for abstract submission is February 15, 2007.

Details about registration will be available later on the conference website at http://www.esa8thconference.com.

General information on the Research Network

For more information, visit the Ageing in Europe website:
http://www.ageing-in-europe.de

Ageing is an area of increasing interest to sociologists and social policy researchers, stimulated by awareness of the rising proportion of older people, the projected costs of pensions and health care, earlier ages of retirement, the 'vertical' growth of families, changing patterns of consumption and of lifestyles. Societies have responded in differing ways to population ageing, making ageing and intergenerational relations an exciting and important area in which to exchange information and ideas across countries. International comparative research on these issues is vital, and this new Network aims to facilitate international contacts and collaboration among those with research interests in ageing.

Papers presented at the Research Network meetings at the Helsinki Conference concentrated on the following topics:

  • Social Divisions in Material Resources in Later Life
  • Ageing and Health
  • Quality of Life Among Older People
  • Family and Support Networks
  • Life Course Transitions
  • Participation and Activity in Later Life
