Guidelines for submission of Manuscripts to the ESA Book Series, 'Studies in European Societies'

How does this website work?Comments and suggestions for this websiteSearch the ESA-website
Proposals for book projects should be submitted either by 'snailmail' or as an attached file by email to the Convenor of the Book Series Editor:

Patrick Baert, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Cambridge, Free School Lane, Cambridge CB2 3RQ, England, UK. Tel: +44 1223 33 45 20. Fax : +44 1223 33 45 50. Email: pjnb100@cam.ac.uk

Proposals should include the following:

  • A short introduction to the major features of the book. This introduction should summarize the contents as well as explaining how the book makes a contribution to the study of European society. In what ways does the proposed book make a contribution not covered by other scholarship? Who would be most interested in the approach and findings of the work and why should the book be published?
  • The structure of the book. In the case of a monograph, a short outline of the chapters with a brief summary of each chapter should be provided. A sample chapter would be very useful in the evaluation. Proposals for edited volumes should include the title and an abstract of each contribution and if possible a sample contribution and draft of the introduction to the work.
  • Who are the intended audience of the book in detail? To what extent could the book be considered for educational purposes? This description of potential readers should be as detailed as possible, with mention of specific courses of study for which the book could serve as a major or supplementary text. Please make reference to the needs of specific local markets. For example: 'empirical research on European Union labour market policies and their consequences form an important element in German and Spanish courses in the Sociology of Labour'. Any information which can aid in evaluating the proposal in terms of audience is useful.
  • Biographical data on the authors, contributors and/or editors. This should include previous publication experience as well as present position. It is extremely helpful (although not essential) if one of the editors or authors can demonstrate an extensive English-language publication record.
  • Rough estimate of length in words. For most publications an acceptable length will be 100,000 words (600,000 characters) or less.
  • Although all books in the series are published in English, the Editorial Board has decided that proposals can be submitted also in a limited number of other European languages, in order to make it possible for non English speaking Authors to engage in translation process only once their proposal would have been accepted. Please note that if your proposal is supported, you will have to submit a formal proposal in English.
  • All proposals receive an initial response in a short period of time, after circulation of the proposal among the Editors. Supported proposals are then sent to two external anonymous reviewers, chosen among colleagues from different European countries on the basis of their scholarship in the specific field; their recommendations are sent to the Authors for a reaction. The turn-around time for this step is approximately 2-3 months.
  • Should the Editorial Board confirm interest in the project, the whole file (proposal, reviews and Authors’ response) will be sent out to the Publisher together with Editors’ recommendation for publication. Routledge will take a final decision about publishing the book according to their procedures; Authors will be notified of the decision by the Editors.
