Coordinator of the Sport and Society Research Network: General information about the NetworkThis Research Network in the Making was initially proposed at the 1999 ESA conference in Amsterdam. Two years later, in Helsinki, the RN was officially constituted, held its first business meeting and organised the first ESA conference sessions dedicated to the sociology of sport. In all four sessions took place, during which fourteen papers by sociologists from eight different states were discussed. The Research Network has the following foundation aims: 1. to encourage and support research within the sociology of sport. 2. to promote the sociology of sport within national and international professional bodies. 3. to serve as a forum for exchange, collaboration and sharing among sociologists of sport and those with overlapping interests. 4. to organise and host research workshops and conferences relevant to the sociology of sport.
Members of this Research Network include both established academic specialists within the sociology of sport and academics and postgraduates who are developing an interest in this field. At the Torun Conference, the Society & Sports Research Network will organize paper sessions. Papers are invited on any topic appropriate to the foundation aims of the Network. Colleagues are invited to contact the Network Coordinator, Ørnulf Seippel (ornulf.seippel@socialresearch.no) for further information, or to discuss informally any paper proposal.
