International Conference on Health and Social Inequalities Pescara, 23-25 november 2006 Health inequalities are an emerging issue. During the twentieth century took place in Europe an impressive social economic and health improvement, however, several studies revealed an increase of health inequalities in many countries. Recently the Regional Office for Europe of the World Health Organization declared that in economically developed countries exist “unacceptable inequalities in health conditions among social groups” (WHO, 2002) and stressed the importance of social, economical and environmental determinants in the development of these inequalities. Scientific studies contributed to shape public policies aimed to promote equity, to identify critical areas of social and health information and to define research guidelines. However, neither these policies effectively tackled inequalities, nor studies revealed the real impact of different determinants in the development of such differences in health status. This Conference aims to stimulate the scientific research on this issue, trying to deepen and to improve the quality of studies and their effectiveness in defining public policies. CALL FOR CONFERENCE PAPERS Life in Motion; Shifting Spaces, Transcending Times, Crossing Borders - 8th Postgraduate Conference The conference will be held by School of Social Studies, Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic, 28th - 30th June 2007 and organized in cooperation with the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University College London Seventeen years after the onset of revolutionary changes in 1989, Central and Eastern European societies are still confronted with their histories. Memories and recollections of the past are contested and the past is painstakingly constituted through the interplay of collective construction, political bargains, reversals, rationalizing of refusals to come to terms with it as well as attempts to recognize the past and cope with it. Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) have witnessed unprecedented spatial and population shifts and splits which marked the 20th century globally. Many minorities which were often local majorities or equal in number were left in the aftermath of wars as mere memories that quickly faded due to the rapid intrusion of communism. The process of building societies which are not just ethno-culturally heterogeneous but also open to all diverse groups has been contingent on coming to terms with the past. This process became the arena for opening ways to facing current challenges such as migration, borders dissolution and violation of local social and economic balances. Since 1989 CEE societies have undergone unparalleled social change, however, the expected reforms in the spheres of law, public policy, culture, media, economy and social policies have been substantially delayed and compromised. The simultaneous emergence of free-market economies and pluralist politics led to situations in which the state quickly withdrew or collapsed, and distinctions between state, collective, and private domains became unclear. It has been in the interest of those actors that emerged in this initial phase of change to prolong a specifically post-socialist culture between socialism and the free market. This may have decisively contributed to the Eurosceptic backlash in the ranks of particular mainstream political forces and in specific cultural segments and sections of societies in some CEE countries. What is in this light the meaning of "the big European switch" of 2004 and its upcoming enlargement follow-up? How 'Central and Eastern European' have the CEE countries stayed and Western Europe become? What are the reconstituted boundaries? The conference presents a major opportunity for postgraduate students and young academics to discuss the events in Central and Eastern Europe also including but not limited to Eurasia, the Balkans, and the Baltic States. We invite submissions and participants from a wide range of disciplinary perspectives. Proposals should be sent, as email attachments, to: tomasekm@fss.muni.cz at the latest January 31, 2007. ERC call for Early Stage Independent Investigators The Scientific Council of the European Research Council has decided to give priority to a call for early stage independent investigators (ESII) with a deadline early in 2007. The objective of this call will be to provide support to the development of independent careers of excellent researchers who are at the stage of establishing their first research team. The ERC has launched a call for application for individual research projects, at a later step than post-doctoral research already funded by the Marie Curie actions. Procedures for applications have been simplified, there is no nationality requirement, only that a scientific institution based in Europe agrees to host the research project. A significant amount (about 15%) of such first line funding has been devoted to the social sciences and humanities, in the hope to get many good applications from these disciplines. The ERC asked to the main representative organisations of the scientific community in Europe to do their best for making young researchers aware of this opportunity and inviting them to apply. All details are to be found on the ERC website: http://ec.europa.eu/erc under the page “strategy”. Wednesday, April 19, 2006

INTERNATIONAL POLITICAL SOCIOLOGY CALL FOR PAPERS The International Studies Association is pleased to announce the launch of IPS: International Political Sociology, a new interdisciplinary journal to be published beginning in 2007. Responding to the diversification of both scholarly interests and regional concerns in contemporary international studies, it will draw especially on traditions of historical, legal, economic and political sociology, as well as on the burgeoning literatures on socio-political theory. Topics and Running Themes for the first year One such topic might be a historical sociology of the discipline of International Relations, one concerned to better understand, for example, its development in some part of the world and not in others, the link between subjective ideas, values, behaviors and objective professional positions within academic institutions, the relation between academics and political professionals, or why the self-understanding of the discipline seems to be in perpetual debate and crisis. Another might involve discussion of the major works of various sociologists and their impact to the study of IR; for example, reflections upon the works of Bauman, Beck, Bourdieu, Foucault, Luhmann, Tilly… Other possibilities include work on global patterns of urbanization, international policing, military sociology, political opinion and communication, the sociology of culture, the sociology of political movements, and the transnational effects of the reshaping of national, cultural and religious identities. In addition to these themes we are currently considering papers dealing with: - the critical discussion of the notions of frontiers, boundaries and limits; - the analysis of the contemporary status of claims about states of emergency and states of exception, derogatory measures, and routinised technologies of surveillance and control; - the analysis of resistance through laws, and arts; - the analysis of airports as sites at which to assess freedom of movement, capitalist economies, security technologies and the detention of foreigners. Short Submission Guideline Papers dealing with these issues or clearly related to international political sociology must be sent to BOTH didier.bigo@libertysecurity.org and ips@ceri-sciences-po.org In order to help broaden the community engaging in international studies, the journal will facilitate the submission of articles in languages other than English. The possibilities currently under consideration are French, Spanish, Italian and German. Translation into English of the final version of the article should be taken care of by the author. Papers in English First issue: Deadline 2 May 2006 Second issue: Deadline 1 August 2006 Third issue: Deadline 2 November 2006 Fourth issue: Deadline 1 February 2007 Papers in other languages First issue: Deadline 1 April 2006 Second issue: Deadline 1 June 2006 Third issue: Deadline 1 September 2006 Fourth issue: Deadline 1 December 2006 Thursday, April 04, 2002
