Recognition of Previous Studies

Kuva

Previous studies that can be used to compensate courses or study units have to correspond in their content and extent to the courses or study units that are included in the degree requirements of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Each application for compensation of studies will be considered individually. NB! Only studies completed during the last ten years can be recognized as part of a new degree at the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Master's Degree Students

Students admitted in direct admission enter the Master’s Degree program. In some cases, they are required to do complementary studies to supplement their previous studies. Students are informed of the required complementary studies in the notification of admission.

Only in exceptional cases, students accepted in direct admission can cross-credit elements of their previous studies for the Master’s Degree (this might be possible, for instance, if the students Bachelor’s Degree has taken more than 3 years of study, or if it is more extensive than the degree offered at the University of Helsinki, that is, more than 180 ECTS). For more information, the student should contact the person in charge of credit recognition at his/her department.

Bachelor's Degree Students

Studies completed at another Faculty of the University of Helsinki, at Finnish or foreign university or polytechnic can be recognized as part of the Bachelor’s degree (or Master’s degree) to be completed at the Faculty of Social Sciences. There are two types of recognition: you can either compensate courses or study units by your previous studies or have them included as supplementary elements in your degree.

Compensation of Language Studies

All international students who are accepted in general admission and those students accepted in direct admission who have completed their Bachelor’s Degree in English,
automatically receive credits for written and oral skills in English. The credits are registered during the autumn semester.

Language studies included in the Bachelor’s Degree can be compensated with the following studies:
- If you have completed an IB or an EB degree, you can compensate the required course in foreign language oral and written skills (English language oral and written skills 3 credits). - If you have completed a Reifeprüfung, you
can compensate the corresponding course in the German language.
