Degree Students of the Faculty of Social Sciences

Changing Major Subject

Students of the Faculty of Social Sciences have a major subject study right to the subject to which they have been admitted. It is possible to apply for a change of major subject within the Faculty only once a year. The deadline for applications is 30 April. More information is available here.

Enrolling at the University

The period of registration for existing students of the University runs from the beginnig of May until September. For more detailed information on enrolment, please read the web page on enrolment and registration.

Minor Subject Studies

Degree students of the Faculty can study basic and intermdiate studies in all subjects offered at the Faculty without restrictions.

Supplementary Studies for Graduates of the Faculty

Students who have completed a Master's Degree at the Faculty, have the right to apply for supplementary studies free of charge during the academic year following their graduation. For more information on supplementary studies, please contact the Faculty Study Office.

Post-Graduate Studies

It is possible to apply for post-graduate studies twice a year. The deadlines are 15.5. and 15.11. More detailed information on applying for post-graduate studies is available here.

Students of other Faculties of the University of Helsinki

Minor Subject Studies

Degree students of other Faculties of the University can complete basic and intermediate studies in all subjects of the Faculty, excluding Communication.

It is possible to apply for the minor subject study right for the basic studies in communication and for intermediate studies in communication once a year, 30 April. When applying for the study right for intermediate studies, basic studies must be completed.

Students of other Faculties of the University can complete basic and intermediate studies in social work. These studies do not, however, give any formal qualifications to work as a social worker.

Study Right for Advanced Studies

It is possible to apply for a study right for advanced studies in a particular subject of the Faculty. The applicant must have a well-grounded reason for her/his application (for instance, post-graduate studies at another Faculty of the University). Before applying, the student should have completed the intermediate studies in the subject. The application form is available here (pdf-file). Students Coming from Outside of the University of Helsinki

JOO-Studies

Students of other Finnish universities can complete minor subject studies at the Faculty within the JOO Coperation Agreement. The students from other universities can complete basic and intermediate studies in almost all subjects without restrictions (excluding studies at the Department of Communication).

Non-Graduate Studies

Non-graduate status is intended for students who wish to upgrade their professional competence or who will use the credits earned as an integral part of or a supplement to a degree to be completed at another university. Information on applying for non-graduate studies can be found here.
