Apply to study at the Faculty!

The application period for international applicants for Master´s Programmes and Master - level studies for the year 2010 starts on Nov. 16, 2009 and ends on Feb. 1, 2010. Please note, that by this time the application and all the required documents must have reached the University Admissions, otherwise the application is considered overdue and will not be processed. Please note, that just filling the online form does not constitute applying, but the applicant has to deliver all the required documents at the University Admissions by the deadline.

The Faculty of Social Sciences is one of the largest faculties of the University of Helsinki and has a relatively large body of international students, both exchange and degree students.

International students can complete a Master´s level degree (M.Soc.Sc.) or a Doctor's degree (D.Soc.Sc) at the fields offered at the Faculty.

If the applicant has a throughout knowledge of Finnish or Swedish, they may also apply through the regular entrance examination of the Faculty and may be accepted to study for a Bachelor´s degree.

Fields of Study at the Faculty

The following fields are offered at the Faculty, some as Master´s Programmes and some as Studies leading to Master´s degree.

Admission for Undergraduate Studies

International applicants can apply for undergraduate studies by taking the entrance examination held in Finnish and Swedish. Detailed information on general admission is available here.

Admission for Graduate Studies

This admission procedure is meant for applicants who already have a Bachelor's degree in a subject offered at the Faculty or in a field very close to this. This procedure applies to those applicants, who either want to apply for a Master´s programme of the Faculty or who want to study another field at the Faculty.

Applicants accepted for graduate studies receive the right to study for the higher academic degree only (Master of Social Sciences), i.e they may not finish their lower academic degree (B.Soc.Sc.) at the University of Helsinki.

The application period for international applicants for the autumn period of the year 2010 expires on Feb. 1, 2010. For information regarding applying, please see here.

Postgraduate Admission

Post-graduate admission is meant for those students who have already a Master's level degree from an established and recognised foreign university. The deadlines for submitting the applications are 15 May and 15 November.

Exchange and Visiting Students

Exchange Student Status

Information on how to apply for an exchange student status is available here.

Visiting Student Status

Visiting student status is meant for those students who want to study at the Faculty of Social Sciences for a limited period of time and whose university does not have a formal student exchange agreement with the University of Helsinki or its departments. Please note, that visiting students may not graduate from the University of Helsinki.

Non-Graduate Studies

It is also possible to take separate courses or study modules at the Faculty, but it should be noted that non-graduate student status does not give the student the right for student discounts, access to computers etc. Moreover, it is usually not possible to get a residence permit on the basis of non-graduate studies.
