Supporting Documents

All copies of obligatory enclosures must be legalised by the institution that has issued the original document or by a notary public. The requested documents must be in Finnish, Swedish or English, if not stated otherwise.

The required supporting documents are the following:

  1. The printed and signed application itself. You can fill in the online registration form here (available from 16 November 2009 to 1 February 2010), but the printed and signed application has to be included in the application package. Please note, that just filling the online form does not constitute applying, but the applicant has to deliver all the required documents at the University Admissions by the deadline.

  2. Officially certified true copy of the diploma. If the applicant has not received his/her final diploma when submitting the application, s/he will have to send it as soon as possible. In any case, the applicant must present the diploma by 3 August 2010.

  3. Official transcript of previous studies. The document must show incontestably, that the applicant has obtained the units or entities that he or she claims.

    All studies required for the bachelor's degree are to be finished before the beginning of the study year, by 3 August 2010. If the applicant has not finished all the study units before submitting the application, s/he has to send the most up-to-date transcript of his/her studies as well as a statement signed by an official stating that his/her studies are to be finished before the beginning of August.

  4. Language certificate. The languages of instruction at the University of Helsinki are Finnish, Swedish and English. Applicants are asked to provide evidence of their proficiency in English. Please see the listing of acceptable language tests as well as a table of other acceptable ways of indicating one's language skills .Please remember to register for the language test as early as possible to make sure there are available test dates!

  5. Summary of the Bachelor's Thesis. The application must include a thousand-word summary of the applicant's Bachelor's thesis (about three standard (A4) pages) or, if not applicable, an abstract of other relevant academic work written in English.

  6. Motivation letter(included in the online registration form). Briefly describe and explain in English:
    • your motives to apply for this programme/major at the University of Helsinki.
    • how your previous studies enable you to succeed in the studies in the chosen major/Masters programme.
    • how studying in this major/Masters programme relates to your future aspirations and academic objectives.
    • the preliminary topic of your Masters Thesis and/or your academic interests in the chosen field.

  7. Also the following documents, if available
  8. The department of Economics also requires that the applicants for the Master's Degree Programme in Economics take the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) General Test. It is also recommeded that the applicants of Statistics take the GRE test. The test score information must come directly from the testing organisation.The GRE code of the University of Helsinki is 9872. Please note that the GRE test results must reach the University Admissions Finland by February 15 at the latest.

    The GRE General Test measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing skills. The scores provide common measures for comparing the qualifications of applicants. They are not used to measure the applicants' language skills but the applicants are required to provide evidence of their language skills as well (please see item 4).

  9. Applicants may also submit some further documentation that clarify the applicant's academic achievements (study guides of previous studies, curriculum vitae, references etc.). Also, the staff at the departments or at the Faculty may ask the applicant to supplement the application with the said documents.

Instructions on certificates and transcripts

  • All copies of obligatory enclosures must be legalised by the institution that has issued the original document or by a notary public (in Finnish: julkinen notaari).
  • All obligatory enclosures must be in Finnish, Swedish or English.
  • The written application must include as many copies of obligatory enclosures as majors/degree programmes you are applying for. However, only one TOEFL or GRE test score is needed.
  • If you apply for more than one programme of the Faculty of Social Sciences, please place the programmes in order of preference. You may be admitted to only one of the programmes you have indicated.
  • All translations must be done by official translators. The translations must bear the stamp and signature of the translator. Please note that you have to send a legalised copy of the translated document also in its original language.
  • The application with all the required enclosures must be at the University Admissions by the closing date at the latest. Late applications will not be processed.
  • The application with all the required enclosures must be mailed via regular (air) mail or by an international courier service to University Admissions. E-mailed or faxed documents are not be accepted.
  • Mark down your application form number into every document you mail to the University Admissions.
  • TOEFL and GRE test scores are accepted only if they are mailed directly to the University Admissions by the organisation that has administered the test. It is on your own responsibility to request the testing organisation to do this: neither the University Admissions nor the University of Helsinki can do it for you. A student copy or photocopies of the original score slip cannot be accepted.
  • Please note, that just filling the online form does not constitute applying, but the applicant has to deliver all the required documents at the University Admissions by the deadline.
  • Your application can be rejected if any of the required enclosures are missing.
  • The authenticity of all documents submitted to the University of Helsinki will be examined. The use of forged or altered documents will lead to the rejection of the applicant.
  • Your performance in your prior studies should indicate outstanding academic abilities.

The application period for international applicants opens November 16, 2009 and closes on February 1, 2010 at 16.15 (GMT+2). Please note, that by this time the application and all the required documents must have reached the University Admissions, otherwise the application is considered overdue and will not be processed.
