Entrance examination 2005

The admission criteria for admissions in the year 2005 was accepted by the Faculty Council on the 8th of November 2004, and several changes have taken place.

The entrance examination for those applicants, who have finished their secondary schooling abroad is arranged on the 6th June 2005 at the University of Helsinki, Finland between 9 A.M. and 1 P.M. The street address is Unioninkatu 40, lecture hall one. The  Entrance examinations are not organized abroad. The deadline for submitting the applications is January 31, 2005. Those wishing to take the examination and be admitted to study either for a Bachelor´s or Master´s degrees have to apply with the official application sheet of the university of Helsinki (available from International Relations Officer of the Faculty of Social Sciences or from here).

In the year 2005, applicants can only take the examination and be admitted to one field offered at the faculty. The fields of study offered at the Faculty are (the numbers in parenthesis refer to maximum amount of new students accepted to study the field in the entrance examination):

  • Communication (max. 2)
  • Development studies (max. 2)
  • Economics (max. 6)
  • Moral and Social Philosophy (max. 2)
  • Political Science (max. 6)
  • Social and Cultural Anthropology (max. 2)
  • Social Policy (max. 2)
  • Social Psychology (max. 2)
  • Sociology (max. 2)
  • Statistics (max. 3)
  • Social Sciences History (Economic and Social History max. 2, Political History max. 2)

The applicant must obtain at least 2/3 of the maximum points available in the field of his/her choice in the entrance examination.

Required reading for the examination:

In the year 2005, the applicant can apply to only one field of study (subject). The applicant has to study all the books in the field s/he wishes to become a student of. He has to answer to all the questions of the field he wants to become a student of in the examination.

Examples:

  • the applicant wants to become a majoring student in sociology, s/he must answer to the questions of sociology. The applicant wants to become a majoring student in political science, s/he must answer to the questions political science.
  • An applicant who has studied the reading requirements of developement studies can only be accepted to development studies.

However, it should be noted that several subjects have the same entrance examination book. In this case the applicant has to inform on the separate sheet (given to him at the examination itself) of the subject s/he wishes to become a student ofThis choice can not be altered after the examination. The confirmation of the subject given if accepted is binding.

IMPORTANT: Please note, that some fields require the studying two books for the examination and some only one. On the average the amount of reading is more or less the same. The applicant must obtain at least 2/3 of the maximum points available in the entrance examination. ResultsThe results of the examination are announced on the Faculty's bulletin board (Unioninkatu 37, first floor). Examinees will be sent a letter regarding the results in mid-July 2005.

Please also note, that the application procedures and books have changed with the years. The purpose of these earlier questions is to give the applicants an example of the type of questions.

Provisional Admission

When accepted to study at the Faculty of Social Sciences for a Bachelor´s degree after being admitted in the entrance examination, the student first receives a two-year provisional admission. During these two years the student have to complete the certain language and other requirements to be specified in the spring 2005. These requirements will contain:

  1. half of the obligatory language studies in Finnish or Swedish language The equivalent of 10 "old" credits in his/her major subject studies
  2. The equivalent of 10 "old" credits in other studies (including possible studies at another faculty of the University)
All the credits must be obtained at the university of Helsinki. After the student has satisfied these requirements, the student is granted the right to complete a degree at the University of Helsinki. It should be pointed out that the above-mentioned requirements are by no means impossible to achieve, if studies are taken seriously.

Starting from the year 2005, all applicants accepted at the entrance examination will have to first complete the lower degree, Bachelor of Social Sciences (B.Soc.Sc.), before they may proceed to studies leading to Master of Social Sciences.

This conditional admission is not applicable to citizens of the Nordic countries, and it does not apply to those applicants who have finished their upper secondary school in the Nordic Countries (Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark or Finland) and have received a diploma to confirm this.
