Services
The Social Science Library is open to all. The Library serves all who require information in its subject fields and especially staff and students of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Helsinki. In addition to lending services the library offers its customers study facilities and possibilities for independent information retrieval. The circulation office staff instructs library users on how to use the collections, catalogues and databases. The Chief Information Specialist Terttu Turunen gives individual instruction to staff and students of the Faculty of Social Sciences. She also coordinates the library's user education - if you are interested in classroom instruction on library catalogues and databases you should contact her ( Terttu Turunen - phone 191 22555, terttu.turunen [at] helsinki.fi ). The library's reading rooms are open to all. Library users who have computer accounts at the University of Helsinki can use any of the computers in the computer labs or elsewhere in the library. Some of these computers are meant mainly for students at the Faculty of Social Sciences who are writing theses or essays related to their studies. There are also six computers for user without access to the Helsinki University network, through which only library catalogues and databases can be accessed. Laptops can only be borrowed by students registered as majors in the Faculty of Social Sciences. .A library card to the Helsinki University Libraries, a HELKA card, is needed for borrowing material. A library card can be obtained by anybody, who has a Finnish personal identity code (henkilötunnus), in the circulation office or at the other University of Helsinki Libraries.
