Theses Abstract Form Instructions

(OBS. Abstracts of doctoral dissertations are nowadays submitted on University of Helsinki doctoral dissertation form !)

Filling out the thesis abstract form can be divided into three separate parts

 - Planning the Contents
 - Filling out the Form
 - Preview and Printing

Planning the Contents

Abstracts of licentiate theses are usually submitted in two languages and thus on two separate thesis abstract forms, one written in the language of the thesis and one in English. If the thesis is written in another language than Finnish or Swedish the author is recommended to submit an abstract in either Finnish or Swedish, depending on the language skill of the author. If you feel shaky with these, relax. It's not an absolute must.

It is a good idea to prepare the thesis abstract text in advance, writing it on a text editor of your choice. From there the abstract text can be easily be moved to the abstract form with Copy and Paste functions of your operating system. Around 500-word English content is recommended. The text should not contain special editing commands; Italics, bold text etc. aren't allowed. Please embed WWW-links, e-mail addresses and acknowledments to other parts of your work. Leave an empty row between paragraphs.

It is also a sound idea to think in advance what keywords to use. If problems arise, you can discuss the choice of them with staff of the Social Science Library, preferably by email.

Filling out the Form

You should fill out the form on a computer with printing possibilities.

There are instructions on the side of each form entry. These instructions can only be seen while editing the form and will not be visible in the finished abstract, which is submitted along with your thesis to the Faculty of Social Science.

Please don't submit partially filled out forms. The library staff is willing to help if you get stuck.

With your form entries looking correct, use the Preview button at the bottom at the page.

Preview and Printing

On Preview page's bottom left there is a form button 'Final'. You get back to form edit mode by using your browser's Back-button. Don't print out the form yet. If the form seems free of error after double checking the preview, click Final.

Now your abstract has been submitted. There should be no form submit buttons on the bottom of the final page view. There is a reference number (ID number) on top right of the page. Write the ID number down right away. The reference number is helpful if you face, for example, network printing problems and the printing of the abstract has to be done at Social Social Library.

Finally, print the page with browser printing function, one for each copy of the submitted thesis. The ID number should be displayed on the top right of the printout.

If the printed version does not fit on one page, don't worry: It's OK. If you absolutely want the abstract to fit on one page, or the margins of the printout contains displeasing browser-generated data, read instructions here to achieve more finess.

In case you want to print the abstract at some later moment, use your ID number to fill out this form.

Your abstract is saved to an unerasable and unmodifiable file from which the Library of Social Science copies it to the public abstract database, after making possible additions or changes to keywords. If you notice a minor spelling mistake or such after submitting your work to faculty scrutiny, please refill the form, call Eero Piirainen on phone number 09-19123362, keeping your newly generated ID number at hand. Corrected abstract printouts and their language versions will be included for microfilming and subsequent binding of your thesis.
