Eligibility:
Master's and Bachelor's degree students at institutions participating in the the University Network for Communication Sciences. Within the quota of the Department of Communication, University of Helsinki. Priority is given to the students of the Department of Communication. Also two students from the Institute of Development Studies will be accepted to the course within the quota of the Department of Communication, University of Helsinki.
Objectives
The course aims at increasing the students' sensitivity and skills to analyse and produce HIV, AIDS and development related media content.
Content
Departing from the basics of HIV, AIDS and health journalism, this course explores different forms of representations of the disease in a development perspective. The impact of the HI virus and its social, cultural and human rights aspects are contrasted comparing media content in selected African and Western countries. The role of Information and Communications Technology to prevent the spread of HIV will be introduced. The course will also feature participation of and interaction with resource persons from the relevant subject areas as to highlight concrete examples of HIV and AIDS reporting.
Course work and forms of study
Methods Reading and moderated group discussions on the web, combined with individual and group tasks. At the end of the course, the students will contribute to a webzine, which will be published on a HIV and AIDS related website. The course and all course work is in English.
