Content

The course is a research training course focusing on media texts representing racial and ethnic minorities. The course consists of lectures and practical research work. During the lectures current research findings from international and Finnish research projects on ethnicity and media are presented. Further on are introductive lectures given for presenting relevant research methods for analysing media representations. The main focus is on various modes of qualitative text analyses (i.e. discourse analyses, critical discourse analyses and frame analyses), but the usability of content analyses, focus group interviews and expert interviews will be explored in relation to the topic of the course.

During the course, students are individually, in pairs and in small groups analysing media texts and inserts in international newspapers, television and radio and on various Internet news sites and discussion forums. For obtaining the 6 Credits, students are in addition to this deepening their research skills by conducting small scale case studies on their own time.

All the case studies will focus on a common topic decided upon in the beginning of the course according to the interests of the course participants. The theme will however be related to media representations of racial, ethnic, cultural or religious minorities. One suggestion is to focus on media representations of Islam and/or Muslims.
