Content

Structure of the Degree Programmes in Philosophy

Three academic degrees can be obtained through studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences. The first degree is a Bachelor's degree, which consists of 180 ECTS credits and includes General studies, Basic and Intermediate Studies, studies in a minor subject(s) and a Bachelor's thesis. Students may earn a Master's degree, 120 ECTS credits, by completing Master’s Studies in philosophy and a Master's thesis. A doctoral degree is the final, highest postgraduate degree.

The Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy requires 180 credits:

  • General Studies, 25 credits
  • Basic and Intermediate Studies in Philosophy, min. 79 credits
  • Compulsory Minor Subject Studies, 60 credits
  • Other Minor Subject Studies (Elective Studies), 0-16 credits.

General Studies, 25 credits

  • Orientation Course for Foreign Students including personal study plan (HOPS), 2 credits
  • Language Studies in Finnish or Swedish, 15 credits
  • Basic Course in Information and Communications Technology, 5 credits
  • Foreign Language Oral and Written Skills, 3 credits,

Basic Studies in Social and Moral Philosophy, 25 credits

  • Study unit Kf110: Introduction to Philosophy, 3 credits
  • Study unit Kf120: Introduction to the History of Philosophy, 5 credits
  • Study unit Kf131: Introduction to Ethics, 3 credits
  • Study unit Kf132: Introduction to Social Philosophy, 3 credits
  • Study unit Kf140: Introduction to the Philosophy of the Social Sciences, 3 credits
  • Study unit P7: Introduction to Logic, 5 credits (Faculty of Arts, Dept. of Philosophy)
  • Study Unit P4: Introduction to Epistemology, 3 credits (Faculty of Arts, Dept. of Philosophy)

Intermediate Studies in Social and Moral Philosophy, 54 credits

  • Study unit Kf210: History of Philosophy, 6-10 credits
  • Study unit Kf220: 20th Century Philosophy, 5-10 credits
  • Study unit Kf230: Ethics, 5-10 credits
  • Study unit Kf240: Social Philosophy, 5-10 credits
  • Study unit Kf250: Scientific Reasoning and Philosophical Argumentation, 5-10 credits (voluntary for minor subject studies)
  • Study unit Kf270: Philosophy of the Social Sciences, 5-10 credits
  • Study unit Kf280: Seminars Study unit Kf281: Philosophical Methods Study unit Kf282: Seminar I, 4 credits Study unit Kf283: Seminar II, 4 credits (voluntary for minor subject studies)
  • Study unit Kf290: Bachelor's Thesis, 6 credits (only for major subject studies).
