Objectives
This is a compulsory course for all PhD students and should be taken at the beginning of postgraduate studies. The course is organised once a year in the autumn term. The aim of the course is to introduce new students to PhD studies in the Department of Political Science. Topics covered include writing research plans, applying for funding and scholarships, attending conferences and getting published. During the course the students are requested to do a personal_study_plan.

Welcome to the Department – the Department introduces itself
Topics covered: What do postgraduate studies consist of? Which courses have to be taken? How to get study points? What is good supervision and how often can you meet your supervisor?
2. Writing up a research plan and funding your PhD studies (handouts)
Wednesday 24 September at 16-18, Unioninkatu 37 (Dept of Politics meeting room)
Topics covered: What is a good research plan? Should one write a monograph or should the PhD these consist of journal articles? How and where to apply for funding for PhD studies and from where?
3. Teaching, conferences and publications

Topics covered: What teaching opportunities does the Department offer for PhD students? How to attend conferences? How to publish journal articles?
