- Prior registration for the course in WebOodi between 16-20 October. Only for Helsinki University Political Science major students. Exchange and visiting students can't attend the course.

Target group/Course level
Only master level students from Helsinki University whose major subject is political science are eligible for this course. A maximum of 15 students will be accepted. However, as we do not know how many would like to take this course in the academic year 2008-2009 we would like all students interested in this course to contact the course instructor by email to notify your interest: erling.solheim (at) helsinki.fi
Objectives
The course offers a practical introduction to multivariate statistical techniques such as OLS-regression (including the topics diagnostics, curve-linear effects (polynomials) and interactions), logistic regression and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The statistical software SPSS will be used in all analyses. To earn the course credits the student is expected to complete a series of weekly exercises, and to write a short empirical term paper where one of the taught techniques is applied. The term paper will be graded on a scale from 1 to 5. The students will use survey data made available for secondary analysis by the Finnish Social Science Data Archive (FSD) in their term paper work.

The course work will be graded on a scale from 0 to 5.
Course results and retake
The results of the course will be posted on the notice board of the Department by XX. If the course work is not accepted or if the student wishes to raise his/her grade, he/she should contact the teacher within one month after the publication of the results and discuss arrangements for rewriting course work.
Course evaluation anddevelopment
During the last session, students will have an opportunity to give feedback on the course to the lecturer and to fill in an anonymous evaluation form. During the course feedback can be given anonymously.
