This seven-week course is meant for students who have finished their aineopinnot studies.
Content
We will read about, and discuss, the establishment of the American empire at the end of the 19th century, along with its ideological foundations. We will focus on the expansion west and its consequence for Native American groups and the acquisition of territories that are not contiguous with the territorial state in North America. From this historical background, we will discuss contemporary events, the position of the American state, and whether or not this constitutes empire or another form of political organization.

Each student will write an essay-style paper of 10 pages that incorporates ideas from the readings, in English or Finnish. The course is intended as Ethnography Seminar II (10 op) but you can also complete 502 Syventävät teoriaopinnot (10 op) with this course by focusing your paper on theory.
