The twenty-first century came with a digital revolution and economic globalization but also with increased regionalization and unexpected crises. We have been moving towards a global knowledge societies where information skills and competence become the driving forces of social and economic development. Culture and innovations become essential elements for development. Effective learning requires upgraded multimedia educational materials, preferably distributed using broadband Internet applications. Broadband Internet holds great promise for improving multimedia e-learning and telehealthcare capabilities in global scale, especially in rural and isolated areas that are not well served by commercial network providers.Global problems require new approaches to utilize information and communication technology. New types of conflicts and threats emerge and global trends must be analyzed in multidisiciplinary and transcultural research teams.
We are facing a third major educational invention in technology. The first was the phonetic alphabet, the second printing, and now the third is telematics, which means computers connected to networks. There is a need for a new global strategy for promoting the role of information and communication technology (ICT) in different fields of the working life of the emerging knowledge societies and developing educational and training approaches on how to learn the use of ICT and become digitally literate in the spirit of sustainable development. Digital literacy is a fundamental element of the knowledge society. It is now seen as a right for all.
These developments will be analyzed in the course and the participants will also have a chance to contribute to the ongoing processes of media literacy education.
