S2. Advanced Microeconomic Theory

N.B. If students have already completed the Advanced Microeconomic Theory and have included it in their basic and subject studies in economics (in accordance with the old structure of the bachelor´s degree), they do not have to complete this course twice but they should take some other optional advanced courses in economics for at least 15 credits.
Objectives
The course starts with the theory of production, theory of a firm and consumer theory in terms of optimising behaviour. Subsequently, conditions for the existence of competitive equilibrium are derived and the criteria for Pareto-efficient allocation of resources are presented. As further topics, the theories of uncertainty and strategic behaviour are introduced.Prerequisites
Study units KA2, KA4, KA5 and KA7 and mathematics 25 credits and statistics 25 credits. Students of econometrics: as above but it is recommended that the student has passed studies of statistics (50 credits) before taking this study unitMode of assessment
A lecture course in English (42 h), practical exercises and examinations.The course will be lectured jointly for students of the University of Helsinki and for students of Helsinki School of Economics.
This course is only meant for major subject students of the department of Economics.
