Recommended text: Social Work and Migration: Immigrant and Refugee Settlement and Integration, Kathleen Valtonen 2009, Ashgate; journal articles to be recommended at beginning of course.This course is meant to address central issues in social work practice with immigrant and refugee clients. The aim is to deepen understanding of immigration and settlement issues, and to develop the students’ capacity to engage effectively with the challenges of immigrant incorporation. The course explores a range of social work approaches which can be used to exert positive influence on the course of settlement and integration.
Content
The course covers the following topic areas:- 3.11. International migration and migration antecedents; immigration in Finland
- 10.11. Settlement and integration policy and programmes; the welfare state; social citizenship
- 17.11. Social Work approaches to practice with immigrant and refugees: Human Rights and Citizenship Rights; Ethnic-Sensitive and Culturally Competent Approaches; Radical social work; Preventive Approaches; Critical Social Work
- 24.11. Immigrants relations to societal institutions: The State, the Market and Civil Society; Institutional Participation Integration (structural and social)
- 1.12. Concepts and Frames for Understanding Settlement and Integration Processes and Policy: - Acculturation and Culture, Assimilation, Multiculturalism and Transnationalism
- 8.12. Society and its minorities; the situation of the ‘second generation’
