The first WWTP in Baltic Sea region

Wastewaters of Gdansk were treated in the irrigation fields since 1872.

Modern water supply systems were built in large cities in Europe mostly at the end of the 19th century. However, since the Middle Ages many cities had used wells to supply water and wooden sewer pipes for sewage disposal. Gdansk (Danzig) has been in the forefront of sanitary engineering. The first system, constructed already in the 14th century, served for 500 years. When a modern system was installed in 1869-1872, it was the first comprehensive water and sewage management system on the Continent. Thus a disease-ridden city was transformed into a healthy community by constructing a water network supplied with pure groundwater and a sewerage system which conducted all wastewater to a treatment plant. This wastewater treatment plant taken in use was probably the first WWTP in the Baltic Sea region and it served for 120 years!
