Until the end of the 19th century the influence of Riga's wastewater on the surrounding water bodies was insignificant as the urban population of Riga was comparatively small and the wastewater load was quickly self-purified. Industrialisation at the end of the 19th century changed the situation.

Unfortunately the history of wastewater management and water protection in Riga was not studied.
