Prevention
Prophylactic
measures and welfare in Nordic countries,
the past and the present
2 – 3 Oct 2004 Tvärminne Zoological
Station
Prevention is a research
seminar on the historical development and current trends of health and
welfare policies in the Nordic countries. The uniting theme and the
focus of the seminar is prevention; namely, various measures adopted in
the Nordic welfare societies to prevent illnesses and social pathologies
and to promote health and well-being.
The seminar integrates
historical and current perspectives on the preventive rationalities of
Nordic public health and welfare, their practical application and future
development. Among the key topics are
• power, coercion and co-operation
• the relationships between preventive measures and
the production of knowledge, expertise and
technological rationalities
• the ethical dimension of health and welfare: how
questions of rights, duties and responsibilities
are articulated in various preventive regimes.
The themes of the plenary
sessions include tuberculosis work, prevention of cardiovascular
diseases, eugenics, mental health work, child guidance, and genetic
counselling. The working language of the seminar is English.
(For a preliminary program, see http://www.valt.helsinki.fi/sosio/phe/prevention.htm.)
