The objective of the Community Initiative Project SEXUAL
AND GENDER MINORITIES AT WORK was to bring about a change
towards greater equality in working life and to encourage discussion
on the status of sexual and gender minorities in the labour
market. The project finished in July 2004.
The project involved the
development of models that can be used to improve workplace
practices from the perspective of homosexual, bisexual
and transgendered women and men. In the course of the project,
various studies were be carried out on the status of sexual
and gender minorities in working life. In October 2002,
a questionnaire was distributed and followed by a set
of interviews.
Although the Finnish legislation prohibits employment
discrimination based on sexual orientation, it is as yet difficult
to say if the legislation actually prevents discrimination
or affects everyday practices. The purpose of the
project was to offer training and information as well as to
create co-operation networks in order to analyse the current
situation and to prevent discrimination.
The project was launched in May 2002, after
a six-month planning period. The project was governed by the
Department of Sociology at the University of Helsinki, and
it is carried out in co-operation with the National Research
and Development Centre for Welfare and Health, or Stakes, and
the Finnish National Organisation for Sexual Equality, SETA.
The idea was to co-operate with
cities and municipalities involved in the pilot projects.
The project, funded by the Finnish Ministry
of Labour and the European Social Fund, was completed
in the summer of 2004. In Finland, it marked the first large-scale
attempt to change attitudes towards issues concerning sexual
orientation and transgender issues in working life.
