Monica Pivetti: Natural and unnatural. Animal welfare and rights activists' representations of animals and animal biotechnology in Italy.
The book provides an original contribution to the understanding of the many voices of the current debate on the humananimal relationship and on animal biotechnology, in particular. Drawing from the Social Representation theory, the author examines the belief systems behind the animal rights movement and sheds light on the construction of the meaning of animals and nature in modern society.
Moreover, the activists' and lay people's preceptions of animal biotechnology is explored in order to reveal the reasons behind the widespread opposition to such technology in Europe. The representation of animal biotechnology is discussed in the light of the attitudes toward science and in the process of symbolic coping with new technologies.

Helena Miettinen: Menetetyt kodit, elämät, unelmat. Suomalaisuus paluumuuttajastatukseen oikeutettujen venäjänsuomalaisten narratiivisessa itsemäärittelyssä.
Venäjänsuomalaiset ovat olleet vilkkaan mielenkiinnon kohteena siitä lähtien, kun inkeriläisten paluumuutto käynnistyi presidentti Mauno Koiviston huhtikuussa 1990 antamasta lehdistöhaastattelusta. Inkerinsuomalaisia on perinteisesti pidetty Inkerinmaalla asuvina, suomenkielisinä ja evankelis-luterilaisina. Inkerin-suomalaisten lisäksi entisen Neuvostoliiton alueella asuu muitakin juuriltaan suomalaisia ryhmiä, jotka ovat jääneet vähemmälle huomiolle suomalaisessa diskurssissa. Tutkimuksessa mukana ovat 1920–1930-luvuilla Neuvostoliittoon siirtyneet amerikansuomalaiset ja loikkarit. Yhteensä haastatteluja on 73.
Helena Miettisen narratiivinen tutkimus osoittaa, että inkeriläisten oma suomalaisuuden kuva on kokenut huomattavia muutoksia historian pyörteissä. Venäjänsuomalaisten kokema suomalaisuuteen ovat vaikuttaneet lähihistorian tapahtumat ja yhteiskunnalliset muutokset ja erityisesti kärsimyskokemuksilla on suomalaiseksi määrittelyssä keskeinen paikka.
Johanna Aholainen: Organizational Identity and Work Dress. Observing Sales Personnel in an Insurance Company
In Organizational Identity and Work Dress, the author brings together an interesting reading to illustrate the complexity of work dress and its connection to organizational culture. The interdisciplinary study analyses commitment in the organization and its effect on organizational membership, clothing behavior and image use.
The present study provides a new framework for work dress in organizational context using Social Identity Theory (SIT). Moreover this book offers new insights to customer service, sales and marketing.
The empirical study conducted in three parts and it concentrated on sales personnel in a Finnish insurance company. Results showed that work dress signifies commitment and it is a form of communication. Clothing was also used as tools of sales and self-management.
This book is essential reading for all interested in SIT, organizational symbolism and psychological group phenomena.

Liisa Myyry: Components of Morality. A Professional Ethics Perspective on Moral Motivation, Moral Sensitivity, Moral Reasoning and Related Constructs Among University Students.
To act morally, a professional needs moral sensitivity, moral judgment, and moral motivation. Those three components of morality are obviously interrelated, but how? The studies published in this volume shed new light on this question in a manner which combines social and developmental psychology with professional ethics education.
Through a series of studies among university students, Liisa Myyry provides answers to such questions as:
- Can moral sensitivity be enhanced through training?
- What are the values, if any, associated with moral sensitivity, complexity of thinking and emotional empathy?
- Do the developmental stages of moral reasoning manifest themselves in the way procedural justice rules are applied to ethical problems?
Myyry starts from Rest's Four Component Model of morality but her work draws upon a variety of approaches - Schwartz's Value Model, Integrative Complexity Theory, the Social Psychology of Procedural Justice - to provide a broad analysis of the social psychological bases of professional ethics.

Soile Juujärvi: The Ethic of Care and Its Development. A Longitudinal Study Among Practical Nursing, Bachelor-Degree Social Work and Law Enforcement Students
Twenty years ago Carol Gilligan identified a different moral voice among women, which challenged the dominant voice of justice in morality research. Instead of individual rights, the voice of care is focused on the dynamics of relationships and responsibilities. Ever since, the ethic of care has been the target of an ongoing debate. It has become increasingly popular among ethical practitioners and researchers, especially feminist writers.
Gilligan also claimed that the ethic of care has a developmental path of its own. Development would entail successive stages of self-concern and caring for self, conventional caring for others with self-sacrifice, and finally the balanced caring for both self and others. However, the mainstream of moral psychology has neglected the developmental aspect of Gilligan’s work.
This study investigates whether the ethic of care has the proposed developmental sequence. The sample consisted of 66 prospective professional care and justice workers. Moral reasoning among practical nursing, bachelor-degree social work and law enforcement students was examined in the beginning of their education and after two years.
Moreover, this thesis analyses different conceptualizations of the ethic of care, and reviews the debate between Gilligan and Kohlberg, care and justice. The empirical part illuminates how the ethics of care and justice interplay in real-life moral conflicts as told by the participants in their own voices.
This thesis provides a new understanding of the ethics of care professionals. It opens a fresh perspective to many current ethical issues in our contemporary society. Liisa Husu: Sexism, Support and Survival in Academia. Academic Women and Hidden Discrimination in Finland
Academia promises much for women. Formal obstacles to women's access as women to higher education or advancement to even the highest academic posts are rare. Women have made great gains as recipients of higher education, and in many countries over half of the student population is female. However, women's underrepresentation among academics and gender inequalities in academia are persistent and global phenomena. This is also the case in Finland, one of the foremost countries in the world when it comes to overall gender equality, and a country with the highest proportion of women in the professoriate within the European Union.
Sexism, Support and Survival in Academia approaches academia as gendered organisations, characterised by gendered divisions, symbols and interactions, drawing on over 100 semi-structured interviews and accounts from women in eleven Finnish universities and all main disciplinary fields. In examining academic women's gender discrimination experiences and related responses and coping, it explores how persistent gender inequalities in academia are both reproduced and challenged, in the seemingly gender equal Finnish setting. Specific issues explored include sexual harassment and motherhood in academia; academic women's support in their careers; and the survival strategies they employ.
Sexism, Support and Survival in Academia demonstrates how sexism and hidden discrimination continue in the daily life of academia, but also underlines the various ways academic women continue to challenge this. The book is addressed to not only academic women but all concerned with changing academia, science and society towards greater equity, increased inclusion and the full valuation of women in the production of knowledge.

Jukka Lipponen: Organizational identifications. Anticedents and consequences of identifications in a shipyard context
According to this book, organizational identification may simultaneously have multiple targets and both positive and negative consequences. The aim is to search the predictors of organizational identification and to make a partial integration of two previously distinct research traditions: social identity theory and organizational commitment research. The author investigates the effects of identification on extra-role behaviour, and the effects of subgroup and superordinate identifications on intergroup differentiation between the subgroups.
The empirical part of this work is based on two samples gathered from a Finnish shipyard. The first sample consisted of the shipyard´s own workforce and the second consisted of employees of 20 different subcontractors working at the same shipyard. The book provides insigths for anyone interested in intergroup relations or organizational psychology.

Is nuclear power safe? This is a controversial issue. Sensible fear studies nuclear power as a threat in society. What is the role of social interaction in a nuclear threat situation? What kind of social psychological processes take place after a nuclear accident? Nuclear accidents are compared with other disasters, both man-made and natural, as potential traumatic effects. Psychological Acculturation and Adaptation among Russian-Speaking Immigrant Adolescents in Finland explores the complexity and dynamic nature of the acculturation process. The phenomenon of acculturation is considered with special reference to changes over time, ethnic identity, the actual degree of acculturation, and predictors of successful adaptation during the process. Particular emphasis is placed on immigrant with a returnee background.
Inga Jasinskaja-Lahti’s studies present several interesting results. For example, cultural contact orientation and language- and family-related factors prove to be important for the ethnic identity of adolescents, who continuously have to reassess the importance of their ethnic belonging. The results also show the importance of the experiences of parental support and of adherence to traditional family values, both of which promoted the psychological adaptation of the adolescents studied.
These findings are valuable for the further development of acculturation research, as well as for educational and social workers and others influencing immigrant integration.
