THREE RADICAL RESPONSES TO GLOBALISATION
In recent years a growing grassroots movement has developed which aims to challenge and/or modify the process of globalisation. This movement reached the highest point of its mobilisation so far during the protests against the World Trade Organisation in November 1999 in Seattle. Despite the size and energy of the protest, many observers were struck by the diversity and possible incompatibility of the various views and groups involved. This paper acknowledges the truth of these observations and asserts that the grassroots, radical response to globalisation is now forming into a three-way division between left nationalists, green anarchists and global democrats. The paper outlines the distinct values and programmes of each strand and argues that only the global democrat position offers a response to globalisation which is both progressive and realistic. The paper also raises some of the unique problems which face the construction of a transnational movement for global democracy.
