General Information
The Minor Subject in EU-studies is an interdisciplinary study unit that is recommended as a Minor Subject in the Faculties of Social Sciences and Law, but that is available also for the students of other faculties. The purpose of the study unit is to improve a readiness for being in charge of positions related to the European Union. The study unit approaches the EU from different scientific perspectives and gives a many-sided package to the scientific debate around the EU.
The Structure and The Right to ParticipateThe study unit consists of lecture courses as well as of working and expert seminars and literature studies. The study unit can be taken in the form of a Study block A (15 cr; 30 ECTS), B (25 cr; 50 ECTS) or C (36 cr; 72 ECTS). The main language for the teaching activities is Finnish, but part of the teaching takes place in English. In principle, the whole study unit can be taken in English, mainly in the form of literature studies (a possibility to compensate books in Finnish should be discussed with examinators). This option should be discussed with the examinator of the study block in the question.Every student of the University of Helsinki has the right to participate in the Minor Subject in EU-studies. A person who is not registered at the University, or who wants to complete a degree taken at the University of Helsinki, can be given the right to participate in the Study Unit. The student office gives more information about this possibility. Students of universities belonging to the so-called JOO-agreement are entitled to studies in the Minor Subject. A particular number of places have also been reserved to the students of the Open University. A recommendation for all participants is 15 cr (30 ECTS) taken in the main subject. A precondition for the right to participate in the Minor Subject in EU-studies is the completion of the study unit Introduction to European Integration. The Study ProgrammeIf the Minor Subject in EU-studies is taken in the form a study block A (15 cr / 30 ECTS at least), the only mandatory study unit is Introduction to European Integration (2 cr / 4 ECTS). Besides that, a student should complete 13 voluntary local credits at least (26 ECTS).
If the Minor Subject in EU-studies is taken in the form a study block B (25 cr / 50 ECTS) or C (36 cr / 72 ECTS), besides Introduction to European Integration, a student should complete a working seminar lasting one semester (4 cr / 8 ECTS). Besides them, one can choose 19 or 30 voluntary study weeks (28 or 60 ECTS).
